Tagged Image Format Files (TIFF) is a format of file for storing images, and is popular within several different graphical industries including amateur and professional photographers because of its ability to store lossless images.

By default, JPEG images are compressed, but unlink traditional data compression methods, a JPEG file compresses images by deleting parts of the image, which can result in a loss of quality.

A lossless image has no such compression, and therefore loses no quality, this can result in very large files, e.g. a 4800 DPI 35mm slide scan that would generate a 15mb JPEG file would be over 70mb when stored as a TIFF file.

For most users, JPEG files are suitable for converting their slides to digital, most software that produces JPEG files should allow you to specify a compression factor, which determines how much data is deleted, the less data deleted the better quality the image.

Our photo scanning service by default will return your files in JPEG format with the least amount of compression possible, but we are happy to provide your images back as TIFF files at no extra charge, just ask within the special instructions on our online order form

TIFF files were originally designed in the 1980's as a standard format in use for desktop scanners, its initial design could only cope with black and white images, but as technology improved, so did the TIFF specification, and now is one of the standard methods for storing high color depth images along with JPEG and PNG.
